When Titanic sank in the sea
The Titanic sank in the early morning hours of April 15 1912 after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. The sinking of the Titanic is considered one of the most famous maritime disasters in history. Several factors contributed to the sinking:
Why Titanic collision with iceberg?
Collision with an iceberg: The ship struck an iceberg that was not spotted until it was too late to avoid a collision. The iceberg caused significant damage to the Titanics hull opening up multiple compartments to the sea.
Titanic Lifeboats
Insufficient lifeboats The Titanic was equipped with lifeboats but not enough to accommodate all the passengers and crew on board. This led to a shortage of lifeboats and left many people without a means of escape.
Design and construction of Titanic
Design and construction: The Titanics design featured a series of watertight compartments intended to keep the ship afloat even if some compartments were breached. However the compartments were not sealed off completely at the top allowing water to spill over from one compartment to another as the ship listed.
Safety Regulations:
Inadequate safety regulations: At the time maritime safety regulations did not require enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew. This was based on the assumption that ships like the Titanic were unsinkable. This tragedy prompted significant changes in safety regulations for future maritime vessels. Lack of communication: Due to a variety of factors including a lack of coordination and confusion among the crew the distress signals sent by the Titanic did not reach nearby ships in time for a rescue operation.
These factors combined with other circumstances and shortcomings resulted in the sinking of the Titanic and the loss of more than 1500 lives. The disaster led to major improvements in maritime safety regulations such as the requirement for sufficient lifeboats and better communication systems on ships.
